Obama, Gruber, and Obamacare: Lies About Lying

If you are a habitual liar, what do you do when you are caught in your lies?  You could do the right thing, confess, and come clean.  Or you could double-down on your lies.

When asked directly if he or his administration had, as Gruber insisted, intentionally misled the public and oversight organizations like the Congressional Budget Office when they crafted the Accordable Care Act, Obama’s reply was terse and direct. “No,” he said. “I did not.”

So “if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor,” “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan,” and that little promise about premiums going down were not lies?

How stupid does Obama think we are to keep believing his lies upon lies?  Pretty stupid apparently.  Which is right in line with the Gruber videos . . .  which seem to increase in number by the day.

If Obama were a CEO instead of POTUS he would have done a perp walk by now and would be well on the way to prison for fraud.

Downfall XXI: Obama SINKing?

Mea culpa.  I committed the sin of gloating last night.
For Republican David Jolly beat Democrat Alex Sink in the special election to fill Florida’s 13th Congressional seat, and the temptation to schadenfreude was too great.

I noticed not a little denial from Democrats last night.  Yes, a few got it that last night is not a good sign for them.  But others were so much in denial it got funny.

Yes, this was a special election.  And when conservatives are energized and angry, special election turnouts particularly favor them.

But Alex Sink is a past candidate for governor with high name ID.  She and allies outspent David Jolly.  And Jolly was not an especially attractive candidate and not the Republican’s first choice.  And this district voted for Obama twice.

This special election is not the earthquake Scott Brown’s Massachusetts victory was in 2010.  But it still confirms good signs for Republicans in the mid-term elections this year.

Ed Morrissey, in his particularly balanced analysis, points out that Obamacare was a weight around Sink’s neck and it . . . sank her. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)  It was the biggest issue of this race, and Jolly was rather jolly aggressive about it.  One of his ads ended thusly:

She supports Obamacare. I don’t. I’m David Jolly, and I approve this message because [we] need someone to look out for our interests, not President Obama’s.

No, not very subtle, but very successful.  Obamacare is that toxic.

As if the night wasn’t bad enough for Democrats, this morning’s NBC/WSJ poll, which has a history of being slanted towards Obama, has Obama’s approval down to a new low of 41%.  And in said poll, 65% think the nation is going in the wrong direction.

There have not been any reports of torches and pitchforks . . . yet.

I am including this post in my Downfall series because it is appearing more likely that Obama will become the lamest of lame ducks after the November elections.

Harry Reid – Despicable Liar

Dirty Harry Reid has stooped so low in the past, it has not occurred to me he could get any lower.

Having done his part to cram Obamacare down the throats of Americans, now he says, on the Senate floor no less, that the numerous stories of people suffering because of Obamacare are “all . . . untrue.”  Again, he has the gall to say those who are telling of suffering because of his work are all liars.

Yes, I share Guy Benson’s anger about this.  The only reason it is not rage is because I slept it off last night.  (And my longstanding policy is when I am really angry, I sleep first and wait until the morning to post.)

And Benson and Twitchy give a long but by no means exhaustive list of those who have told of their sufferings under Obamacare – people Harry Reid says are lying.

And remember, Harry Reid only has his position of Majority Leader because Democrats hold a (semi-fraudulent) majority in the Senate.  If you vote for a Democrat for Senate, you are voting for Harry Reid.

Do I have to say more?

Obama: “I can do whatever I want.”

I’ve spent much of the ten years of this humble blog warning about attacks on the Constitution and on the rule of law, about Obama and his totalitarian streak, and other such trifles.  Too much I’m afraid.  I actually thought such matters were important.

But now I have seen the light.  I’ve had it all wrong.  It is so much better to have a President with the fortitude to put his foot down and say, “I can do whatever I want.”*

Let’s say you are President.  I know.  Who wants anyone else to be President but Obama?  But play along with me.  Is carrying out a law you worked and lied to get passed now threatening to get your allies pasted in the mid-term elections?  Then just say “I can do whatever I want,” and put your whim above the law!  Put off key parts of that law until after those annoying mid-terms!

Well, I guess you could just cancel those annoying mid-term elections, but there’s no need to stir things up quite that much when you can just put off or ignore pesky laws and then steal win some elections with fraud, I mean, accurate and careful counting . . .  and recounting if the need arises.  Count every vote until you get the correct result!  (That’s zero wrong votes in some precincts, just so you know.)

And who cares what the law says?  After all a real American President can say, “I can do whatever I want” and then do whatever he darn well wants!  And isn’t life so much simpler that way?

So praise Dear Leader President Obama!  Because of him, I and this whole country has seen the light.  The rule of law is a triviality to be dispensed with when we have someone like Obama, whose glorious whim is so much better than any law.

And, yes, I am indeed sorry I’ve wasted so much space on this blog and on twitter whining about trifles like the Constitution.  Heck, people like me shouldn’t even have freedom of speech.  And I am so glad Obama’s IRS is dealing with that, too!

---
*Yes, Obama was joking . . . somewhat.  He also joked about sending the IRS after his enemies.  But nothing came of that, did it?

10th Anniversary: Predictions

During the ten years of this blog, I have at diverse times foolishly ventured to make predictions.  Sometimes, I just cannot help myself.  Sometimes I could later say, “I told you so.”  Whereas other times . . .

Anyway, I did make two very good albeit hedged predictions about the Episcopal Church way back in 2005.

First, I pretty much predicted The Episcopal Church would not be suspended from the Anglican Communion, and that during a time when there were noises that they would:

Still, I have seen liberals get away with murder in mainline denominations again and again. Partly out of that experience, my gut feeling is that the ECUSA will get away with its disregard of the instruments of authority in the Anglican Communion. Plus there has been talk that ++Rowan Williams simply will not go along with suspending the ECUSA. I do hope and pray that such talk and my gut feelings are what are being unrealistic. We’ll see.

Second, and this was even better, I predicted that 2008 would be “a year of schism.”

I don’t know what the next three years will look like, particularly what 2008 will look like. I do think that will be a year of schism. I’m not predicting dioceses will leave ECUSA, but that is possible.

Sure enough, the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Ft. Worth, and Quincy left The Episcopal Church in 2008.  Again, I made that prediction in 2005.  I nearly forgot about that and now wish I had been more dogmatic about it!

Unfortunately, I was rather dogmatic about my prediction that Mitt Romney would be elected President.  That came to a miserable end for all to see on Election Night.

Yet the following January, I dusted myself off and bravely predicted the self-destruction of Obama, and hence began my Downfall series.  Obama seems to be getting away with so much that at times I wonder if that whole series will prove to be one big failed prediction.  We shall see.  I think the most important of my Downfall predictions is about Obamacare:

I think Obamacare will be the biggest factor in the Downfall of the Obama Regime.  Americans have been very tolerant towards Obama, too much so.  Anger and frustration with Obamacare could be the tidalwave that washes that tolerance away.  It will thereby increase the downward political drag of all the other heretofore overlooked enormities of the Obama Administration.

That one is looking it might be right at the moment.  But, as with all my foolish predictions, we shall see.

I feel like I should mark my 10th anniversary with another big and foolish brave prediction.  But I do not have one in me at the moment.  If and when I do, I’ll let you know.

IRS Targeting – There Must be a Special Prosecutor

Think IRS targeting of political opponents is a thing of the past?  Think exposure and Obama making his faux displeasure known put a stop to it?

Think again.

Not only does IRS targeting continue, it is progressing on a new front, against vocal opponents of Obamacare.

Which prompts me to put my foot down and say there must be a Special Prosecutor of the IRS and of whoever has directed their targeting of political opponents.  And "whoever" includes all the way up to the White House.

The investigation by Congressman Issa, assisted by Rep. Blake Farenthold and other good people, has served good purposes.  But a Congressional investigation can only do much, particularly when even the FBI is in on the cover-up.

That IRS attacks on free speech continue even now make the need for a Special Prosecutor that much more urgent.

And, for reasons I’ve stated before, people must go to prison for this.  There are times when politics are not enough, and this is such a time.  To effectively punish and deter such attacks on our freedom of speech, perps must serve prison time.  And I cannot see that happening without a Special Prosecutor.

And we may have to impeach a President as well.  But let a good, fair, tough Special Prosecutor do his work first.

Downfall XX: Words Words Words

Peggy Noonan wrote a very insightful piece yesterday on a root of Obama’s problems with Obamacare.  In short, she points out (as I did back in June) that Obama is not very interested in actual administration.  And he has precious little experience at it.  His thing has always been . . . words.

It’s a leader’s job to be skeptical of grand schemes. Sorry, that’s a conservative leader’s job. It is a liberal leader’s job to be skeptical that grand schemes will work as intended. You have to guide and goad and be careful.

And this president wasn’t. I think part of the reason he wasn’t careful is because he sort of lives in words. That’s been his whole professional life—books, speeches. Say something and it magically exists as something said, and if it’s been said and publicized it must be real. He never had to push a lever, see the machine not respond, puzzle it out and fix it. It’s all been pretty abstract for him, not concrete. He never had to stock a store, run a sale and see lots of people come but the expenses turn out to be larger than you’d expected and the profits smaller, and you have to figure out what went wrong and do better next time.

People say Mr. Obama never had to run anything, but it may be more important that he never worked for the guy who had to run something, and things got fouled up along the way and he had to turn it around. He never had to meet a payroll, never knew that stress. He probably never had to buy insurance!

And he has surrounded himself with Liberal to Leftist ideologues, often young, who are, yes, idealistic, who put being right, er, being enlightened and politically correct far above the boring nuts and bolts of administration.  The result?  (And I find this passage from Noonan’s post particularly revealing.)

For four years I have been told, by those who’ve worked in the administration and those who’ve visited it as volunteers or contractors, that the Obama White House isn’t organized. It’s just full of chatter. Meetings don’t begin on time, there’s no agenda, the list of those invited seems to expand and contract at somebody’s whim. There is a tendency to speak of how a problem will look and how its appearance should be handled, as opposed to what the problem is and should be done about it. People speak airily, without point. They scroll down, see a call that has to be returned, pop out and then in again.

It does not sound like a professional operation. . . .

And when you apply this to the ObamaCare debacle, suddenly it seems to make sense. The White House is so unformed and chaotic that they probably didn’t ignore the problem, they probably held a million meetings on it. People probably said things like, “We’re experiencing some technological challenges but we’re sure we’ll be up by October,” and other people said, “Yes, it’s important we launch strong,” and others said, “The Republicans will have a field day if we’re not.” And then everyone went to their next meeting. And no one did anything. And the president went off and made speeches.

Because the doing isn’t that important, the talking is.

So what we have here is a President and an administration that is very interested in words, but not terribly interested in the logistics of actual administrating.  As Charles Krauthammer wryly opined yesterday, “It’s sort of touching the way [Obama] believes in the power of rhetoric, his rhetoric, in denying and trumping reality.”  It is not unlike the dictator who thinks he can go out on his balcony, make a ringing declaration, and it is so!

Well, sometimes that does not work as intended.

And, although Obamacare is so ill conceived it was fated to be a disaster, this wordy ideological trait of the Obama administration has certainly made things worse, thereby making the Downfall of both Obamacare and Obama that much more likely.

Downfall XVIII: Obama Blames Republicans for Obamacare

Yes, this is a second Downfall post today, and, no, I am not kidding.  Obama really did blame Republicans for the problems besetting Obamacare:

“One of the problems we’ve had is one side of Capitol Hill is invested in failure,” Obama said at the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council meeting in Washington.

One reason I include this in my Downfall series is this what tyrants do when their regime is failing; they blame others for their own failure.  The Communist Pigs in charge of Venezuela blame those Yanquis, especially the CIA.  Yeah, the CIA is very busy keeping toilet paper from Venezuelans.  Heck, Hitler blamed the whole German people.  They failed him as if his foolish invasion of the Soviet Union had nothing to do with losing WW2.

Anyway, I do not find Obama’s blame game even worthy of rebutting.  But Ed Morrissey has posted a good one anyway.  AND if you want a really meaty epic rant that this blogger envies, go to Ace and his taking apart the attempts of Dana Milbank and other Leftist hacks to blame Republicans for Obamacare's problems.  In short, Milbank and company are attempting to vilify Republicans because they were soooo evil as to oppose Obamacare and to – brace yourself – tell the truth about it.  Horrors!  In Ace’s words:

[Milbank’s] just Darned Angry at the GOP for blowing the whistle and letting people know that Obama is turning them into farm-animals to be periodically shorn of fur with which to make sweaters for members of Obama's coalition.

Pretty much.

Downfall XVII: CBS Poll – Obama Approval Falls to 37%

Just over a month ago, I opined the following:

Obamacare will be the biggest factor in the Downfall of the Obama Regime.  Americans have been very tolerant towards Obama, too much so.  Anger and frustration with Obamacare could be the tidalwave that washes that tolerance away.

In case you haven’t noticed, that seems to be happening.  The worst indication for Obama came this morning.  A CBS, yes CBS, Poll has Obama’s approval in Bush territory – 37%

And the employee insurance cancellations have not even begun yet.

But it is sad that Americans had to be so directly and personally hurt by Obama’s policies before they turned against him.  That is not a good commentary on the current state of our political culture.

It is also an indication of how foolish and ideological Obama was to cram Obamacare down our throats.  If he had taken the message of Scott Brown’s election to heart and relented back in 2010, he would, however wrongly, still have the good will of most Americans and might even control both houses of Congress.

Behold, the wicked man conceives evil
and is pregnant with mischief
and gives birth to lies.
He makes a pit, digging it out,
and falls into the hole that he has made.
His mischief returns upon his own head,
and on his own skull his violence descends.

Isn’t That Special

Back in late 2009 and 2010, poll after poll indicated a majority of Americans did not want Obamacare.

But Democrats went ahead anyway.

Early in 2010, opposition to Obamacare got a Republican elected as Senator in a special election . . . in Massachusetts.

But Democrats went ahead anyway.

It became clear that, unlike past major entitlement initiatives, Obamacare would get virtually no Republican votes in either the Senate or the House.  And polls continued to show a majority of Americans did not want it.

But Democrats went ahead anyway.

In September 2010, Senate Republicans tried to stop cancellations of health insurance policies due to Obamacare implementation.

But Democrats voted their resolution down . . . every Democrat.

In September 2013, when Obamacare was about to go into effect and it was obvious it was not ready to go, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and others tried to delay Obamacare.

But Democrats were so determined to go ahead with Obamacare on schedule that they shut down other parts of the Federal government to do so.

But nowwww that there is a growing backlash against the enormities of Obamacare, particularly policy cancellations, with Democrat poll numbers plummeting, Democrats are OH-so-concerned.

Well, isn’t that special.

In fact, it is so heartwarming, I created a meme this morning.

You're welcome.

The Bookworm on Obama’s Pattern of Lying

Back in 2008, I rightly had Obama pegged as a Leftist and a liar.  And nobody can say I did not warn people about him.

But one Bookworm did me one better I must confess.  Not only did he see Obama as a liar, he dissected with remarkable precision the character and pattern of his lies.  Last week, he pretty much said “I told you so,”  beginning,

More than five years ago, when Barack Obama threw his hat into the political ring, I realized that he was a malignant narcissist who lied compulsively.  For Obama, truth was then and is now defined by the needs of the moment.  If it will benefit him at that moment to say something at variance with facts as other people know them, he is telling the truth because his political needs are the ultimate yardstick by which all truth must be measured.  This pathological outlook means that, when Obama is caught in what ordinary people would characterize an out-and-out lie, he engages in a cascading cover-up of lies, all dictated, not by objective facts, but by his needs at the moment.

And then he goes back to what he said in 2008, which goes into more detail of Obama’s pattern of lying.  I don’t want to paste too much of his post, so please go read for yourself.  But it suffices to say Obama habitually engages in the textbook “affirmative defense” method of prevarication, and the Bookworm was remarkably prescient in spotting that before The One became king President.

And we are seeing that pattern again with his progression of lies on Obamacare.

A Reminder About Apologies

Not all apologies are created equal.  For an apology to be genuine, it has to be accompanied by reasonable efforts to make amends when that is possible.  If the one who makes the apology has the power to make amends, to right the wrong he did, but does not do so, his apology is close to worthless.

I thought this reminder might be timely after a certain so-called apology yesterday.

Ace Sums Up the Obama Presidency

I might have mentioned this before, but Ace of Spades has become my favorite blog.  It comes with a language warning and *ahem* uninhibited “moron” commenters, but wow is it informative, fun, and wide-ranging.

Yesterday, the lead blogger there, Ace, teed off on Obama for giving his union buddies a $63 Obamacare break while not lifting a finger to keep his promises and help those afflicted by Obamacare cancellations, higher premiums, and higher deductibles.  But then most of those unfortunates don’t vote Democrat, do they.

Obama has shellacked middle class individual policy holders precisely because they're (mostly) not in his coalition, but boy is he afraid to impose a $63 a year tax -- that's like five pizzas, in case you're wondering -- on members of his coalition.

The reason I bring this to your attention is that, in the process of addressing this outrage, Ace summed up the Obama Regime all too well:

This is deadly, toxic stuff, pure out in the open piracy, stealing from citizens outside Obama's core supporters to give to his loyal minions. This is Banana Republic stuff.

This is looting.

Obama is the President who bequeathed America our new Looter Economy. . . .

It's government-sanctioned piracy -- it's privateering, siccing some citizens on others, giving First Tier Citizens permission to loot the Second Tier Citizens.

And I cannot do better than that in summarizing the Obama presidency.

The Problem With Lying, Illustrated

To be exact, there are many problems with lying.  God doesn’t like it, for one thing.  But one big problem is that if one wishes a lie to remain believed, one may have to tell additional lies to cover for the earlier lie.  For example…

President Barack Obama told his enthusiastic supporters Monday night that he never promised what video recordings show him promising at least 29 times.

The videos show Obama promising 300 million Americans that “if you like your health-care plan, you will be able to keep your health-care plan, period.”  [ed. To be exact, Obama did use that exact wording.  I am not sure he used that exact wording 29 times.]

But that’s not what he really said, Obama announced Monday in a speech to about 200 Organizing for Action supporters, gathered at the St. Regis hotel in D.C.

“What we said was you could keep it if it hasn’t changed since the law was passed,” he told Obamacare’s political beneficiaries and contractors.

And Obama’s lie upon a lie is verified by Politico reporter Reid Epstein:

Another problem with lies is that when they are discovered, people who trusted them and acted on them, say, by voting for you, might become unhappy.

The Usual Losers

The Federalist has an article by John Daniel Davidson of the Texas Public Policy Foundation which documents that many of the losers under Obamacare will be the young and the healthy.

I’ll defer to Mr. Davidson for the details.  But it immediately occurred to me that this is typical of Democrat policies, and not just under Obama but for decades.

Democrat policy has always been to buy votes now at the expense of future generations.  Opposing Social Security reforms is but one example.  Simple demographics have long shown that Social Security has become a Ponzi scheme that will blow up on today’s young.  But when Republicans tried to avoid this outcome with reforms, Democrats demagogued and told the elderly that Republicans were trying to take their Social Security.  And this worked at the ballot box time and time again as the elderly for decades voted Democrat.

Then there are the multiple ways of buying votes with deficit spending, endangering the future economic health of the nation.  (And, yes, establishment Republicans have participated in this vote buying as well.)

In short, Democrat policy has long been “Screw the young!  Win the next election!”

The other major set of losers under Obamacare and Democrat policies are those who take care of themselves, in other words, the healthy.  (Granted, some people through genetic or economic inheritance are physically or financially healthy through little effort of their own.  So, yes, I am generalizing.)  Under Obamacare, a big reason premiums for the healthy are going up is because people with pre-existing conditions are covered, and someone has to pay for that.

Now it sounds all good that pre-existing conditions are covered. And I have a friend who has had epilepsy since childhood.  I don’t have a big problem helping out someone like him, who has an acute health problem that is no fault of his own.  But a lot of pre-existing conditions are self-inflicted through over-eating, laziness, smoking, etc.  Should someone who works to take care of herself have to pay for the willful negligence of others?  But that is exactly what happens under Obamacare.

And you probably see where I’m going.  Democrat policy is to buy the votes of the lazy and the looters with the taxes of the workers and with deficit spending.  Work, responsibility, and success are punished.  Laziness and fecklessness are rewarded.

So Obamacare is the same old same old from Democrats . . . just on steroids.

So hey, you younguns and those who take care of yourselves, are you tired of being screwed over yet?

Obamacare and Big Lies

Tuesday, I was charitable toward Obama.  Yes, I do that on occasion.  I left the door open to the possibility he was not lying when he said on numerous occasions from 2009 to 2012 that if we like our health plans, we can keep them:

This means one of two things – Obama willfully told us a Big Lie about Obamacare supposedly letting us keep our health insurance plans, or he is so clueless and detached that he did not know what his own signature law and his own administration was doing.  If he was that clueless and really cares about the situation, he will soon come out and insist that Obamacare be administered so that his promise will be somehow, in a fashion, kept.

Well, yesterday we found out Obama’s response to insurance cancellations and other Obamacare problems – doubling down on Big Lies.  And that in turn lets us know he was lying in the first place.

I heard so many lies from Obama and Sebelius and allies yesterday, I cannot even pretend to be able to keep up with them.  But that is part of the Big Lie technique, to tell lies over and over until they become common “knowledge”.

One big whopper told by Obama himself is that what the insurance cancellations really were was transitioning people from inferior plans into better plans.  Lie.  And one repeated by Obama’s hacks.  David Frum’s (well deserved) experience is typical:

Now our protagonist has become “one of the hundreds of thousands of people whose insurance coverage was canceled for not complying with the terms of the Affordable Care Act,” the euphemism for ObamaCare. “As a result, not only will I pay more, but I have had to divert many otherwise useful hours to futzing around with websites and paperwork.”

Before ObamaCare, he paid $668 a month for a high-deductible plan. He actually managed to get through to his “state” exchange (he lives in the District of Columbia) and price a more or less comparable plan. It’s $865 a month, and the deductibles are higher, by $600 within the plan’s network and $1,200 without. By our calculations that means he will pay $2,364 more a year in premiums, and a total of $4,164 more if he maxes out on the deductibles.

In other words, higher premiums and higher deductibles.  (But, but Obama told us premiums would go down!)  That’s what most of those who are dealing with cancellations are facing.  And the cancellations are not the insurance companies’ fault as Obama and allies would have us think.  The cancellations are caused by Obamacare and the Obama Regime’s writing of the Obamacare regs as reported by (even) NBC.  And that can’t be blamed on Republicans either.  Yes, Democrats are doing that as well.

I could go on.  But again, that Obama and allies’ response to  health plan cancellations is to tell Big Lies pretty much proves that “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan” was a Big Lie in the first place.  And now, even the Washington Post’s fact checker agrees, with 4 Pinocchios no less.

But, of course, that Big Lie was necessary to pass Obamacare and re-elect Obama.
