About Cheering the Jailing of Kim Davis

A great deal can and has been said about the jailing of Kim Davis already.  So I will confine myself to pointing out two aspects of the response to her jailing.

1. Protestations that jailing Kim Davis is necessary to uphold the Rule of Law are really, really rich.

Funny how Leftist Democrat officials are almost never jailed or even sanctioned for defying the Rule of Law.  Any Sanctuary City mayors or councilmen in jail?  Has Obama been impeached or even censured for refusing to enforce immigration law?  Were any of those who issued marriage licenses to gay couples when that was illegal, were any of those jailed?

And where was the concern about the Rule of Law when Justice Kennedy and four other Supreme Court justices pulled a coup against the Rule of Law to make Gay Marriage supposedly (BOW DOWN!) the Law of the Land?

Leftist attitudes towards the Rule of Law are just like their attitudes toward democracy.  If it serves their agenda, then great.  If it doesn’t, then their agenda is oh-so much more important than democracy and the Rule of Law.

2. The Pink Shirt crowd might want to think twice about cheering the jailing of Kim Davis.

Does anything show what cretins the Pink Shirts are than their cheering the jailing of someone non-violently being true to their faith?

Reasonable people can disagree with Kim Davis. Unreasonable people are glad she's in jail.

And “unreasonable” is putting it nicely.  This is yet one more episode in which the gay rights crowd shows for all to see that they are neither reasonable nor tolerant.  They once played on people’s sympathy and still try so to do.  But I suspect they are now losing sympathy and fast.  For defeating one’s political opponents is one thing.  Overkill is quite another and evokes sympathy only in Clint Eastwood movies.  And jailing Kim Davis is overkill.

(Yes, it’s a fed judge who jailed her.  But that little changes the result nor the effect.)

But even if the Pink Shirts had enough sense to keep their glee to themselves, they might want to think twice about rejoicing in the jailing of Kim Davis at all.  Americans are a tolerant people.  But they also love freedom, particularly freedom of religion and thought.  And jailing someone for non-violently following the dictates of their faith is an outrage to many, even to those who disagree with how Ms. Davis is going about this.

These and similar episodes are likely weakening support for the gay rights crowd and are awaking, energizing and motivating those with a more sane and traditional view of freedom.  If so, the Pink Shirts may not be the ones cheering in the end.

The Mundanity of Madness

I have long resisted the allures of Netflix.  But I finally have given in, particularly now that my knee has given me an excuse to watch more TV.  I am not quite a binge watcher and hope I never become one.  Besides, I hardly have the attention span for that.  But I do enjoy (if that is the appropriate word) the WW2 and Nazi documentaries.

Something that has struck me as I watch these is how societal madness and profound evil can and often does seem normal, mundane even, when one is in the midst of it.  Indeed, for the average German, life did not seem that much out of line until bombs finally began dropping on Germany.  Oh, the flag was different; Nazi propaganda was everywhere.  But, if anything, life superficially improved for many – the economy improved after the 1929 crash and the following depression that strengthened the Nazis politically; there was certainly more national pride.  As long as one was not Jewish or on the wrong side of the Nazi Party, life seemed relatively good and orderly, especially when compared to the chaos of the Weimar Republic.  At the very least, life went on.

Beyond the Nazis, there is a tendency to think episodes of societal madness and evil happen at other times or in other places.  It is hard to grasp that one is in the midst of such an episode.  Most do not want to comprehend it if their own country is mad and evil; it would not be a pleasant realization.  And it is not too hard to fool oneself to keep from such a realization.  If one is surrounded by dysfunction, it seems normal if that is what surrounds you all the time and one gets used it.  And people can be remarkably adaptable - even (especially?) when they should not adapt.

At times lately I wonder if we are going through such a time now in the U. S.  Yes, I know that surely seems alarmist.  No one I’m aware of wants to send Christians or freedom-minded people to camps, at least not openly.  But look at the sudden change of political discourse in very recent years.  There is a large contingent in this country that acts more like Brown Shirts than Americans, smearing and attacking as bigots, racists, homophobes those who disagree with their once radical agenda and seeking to silence them, to put them out of business, and worse.  Now it has even gotten to the point that seeking to quietly practice one’s religion is attacked as “discrimination.”

Have we not gone mad when cake makers are required to bake a wedding cake for a gay “wedding” or face ruinous fines?  And when a substantial part of the population and leading corporations and politicians (including, yes, Hillary) approve and even cheerlead such persecution?

But, lets admit it.  Even while this is going on, everyday life does not seem that much different, not even for most Christians.

Of course, I recognize that every country has its excesses and bouts of madness even.  And often people respond and/or muddle through, and the society pulls back, at least for a time, before it falls into profound and systematic evil.

But more than we may like to admit, societies, even “civilized” ones, do give into insanity and evil.  And usually it happens with enough subtlety and mundanity that it seems not a big deal . . . except to those who are the victims and to those who later wonder how a society could have gone so wrong.

We are fools if we think the United States is immune to such societal sickness, especially now.

Help a Persecuted Christian Family (but Boycott GoFundMe)

Many of you are familiar with the plight of the Klein family in Oregon.  Their Sweet Cakes by Melissa business had to close their store and retreat to their home.  The business car has been vandalized and broken into twice.  And now they face a $135,000 fine.

Why? Because their Christian convictions would not allow them to participate in a Lesbian wedding by baking a cake for that.  And the Gay Rights Pink Shirts and allies, for whom the gay agenda trumps just about everything, including freedom of religion, would not tolerate the Klein’s Christian choice.

“Choice” is for those who wish to abort their babies or marry the same gender, not for those who wish to live according to their Christian convictions, don’tchaknow.

But people rose up to help out the Kleins by using GoFundMe.  But the Pink Shirts would not tolerate that either.  So they pressured GoFundMe to remove the campaign, and GoFundMe caved.

Oh, GoFundMe abused a company policy against “heinous crimes” to explain their decision to pull the fundraising campaign for the Kleins.  But their explanation is an obvious fig leaf to try to cover up that they caved to the Pink Shirts and joined the persecution of this Christian family.  Only to Pink Shirts and allies is refusing to bake a cake for a gay wedding a “heinous crime.”

Therefore, I urge all readers to boycott GoFundMe.  They have caved to fascists to stop a legitimate campaign to help persecuted Christians. Christians should therefore withhold any fundraising from GoFundMe.

I do nonetheless urge helping out the Kleins and other persecuted Christians, whose numbers are increasing here and around the world.  Samaritan’s Purse is doing just that.

---
Well, isn’t this interesting.  It turns out the owner of another Portland area baker – a competitor? – was one of those pushing GoFundMe to pull the campaign:

GoLocalPDX reported that a Portland baker, Lisa Watson, of Cupcake Jones, started her own campaign to contact GoFundMe and report the Sweet Cakes campaign as being in violation of their terms of service.

"This business has been found GUILTY OF DISCRIMINATION and is being allowed to fundraise to pay their penalty," Watson said in a post on her Facebook page. "The gofundme terms of service address hate speech, bigotry, criminal activity, and sexism among other things in their campaign...The amount of money they have raised in a matter of a few hours by thousands of anonymous cowards is disgusting."

Speaking of disgusting, a brief perusal of her Facebook page reveals her to be a Pink Shirt indeed.

Idaho Ministers Threatened With Jail For Not Performing Gay Weddings

As Maetenloch over at Ace of Spaces puts it:

Don't worry - allowing gay marriage will never mean that pastors must perform gay marriages or face prison. Oh wait never mind.

Two Idaho ministers have been told by the City of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho that they must perform gay “weddings” in their marriage chapel or face jail and/or ruinous fines, up to $1000 per day.

Strange, we were told that warnings about attacks on religious freedom were scare tactics.  Now that the warnings are coming true, we are told our warnings are whining.  And we were told the movement toward gay rights and same-sex “marriage” was all about “tolerance.”

We were told lies.

Houston: Pink Shirts in Power

I am among those who have warned of the totalitarian aims of the gay activist crowd (not to be confused with gays who just want to live peaceably and mind their own business) and their allies.  Now Houston is providing a big “I told you so” moment.

Under lesbian Mayor Annise Parker, the City of Houston passed a so-called equal rights non-discrimination ordinance which quickly became infamous as the “bathroom bill” allowing the mentally ill and perverts to use bathrooms assigned to the opposite gender.  But the bill contained other, less publicized, problematic provisions, including some seen as endangering freedom of speech and religion.

Citizens petitioned to get the ordinance overturned or at least put up to a referendum, and their petitions got over 50,000 signatures when only 17,269 valid signatures were needed.  But the lesbian mayor and her city attorney threw out the petition anyway.

Once again, pink shirts and Leftists only like democracy when they get their way.

Opponents of the ordinance rightly sued the city to overturn their anti-democratic coup.  And now the city has doubled down – and justified fears about freedom of religion and speech – by demanding to see the contents of sermons from numerous pastors.

I have to admit when I first saw the story about sermons being subpoenaed, it was from a sensationalistic source, and it sounded over the top - which it is in its own Constitution-trashing way. I did not give it much credence and moved on.  But this is coming from a number of responsible sources now.

So although the pace of pink shirt attacks on freedom is surprising even me, I can still say, “I told you so.” Pink shirts and their lib/left allies have a totalitarian streak a mile wide, and the more they get power, as in Houston, the more their streak will show.

For then they will slide off the mask of "tolerance" and inform you that getting their way and putting you under their thumb is so much more important than your trivial Constitutional rights.

Democrats, LGBT Groups, and Feminazis Hate Your Freedom of Religion

If there were any doubts about the intent of the various genres of Leftists to crush religious freedom under their agenda, their reaction to the Hobby Lobby decision should remove those doubts.

Democrats, including Bill Clinton, Harry Reid, and even Patty Murray and Barbara Boxer supported the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993.  No more.  Senate Democrats are pushing a bill to weaken RFRA and undo the Hobby Lobby ruling.  Because free birth control pills and abortifacients for everyone is sooo much more important than your freedom of religion.

And LGBTCQXYZOHHELLIVELOSTTRACKALREADY groups are in such a panic that someone might actually get to exercise their freedom of religion concerning acceptance of the perversion of sex and marriage that they have reversed themselves and are now urging the rejection of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act because it actually has language purporting to protect religious freedom.  Horrors!

Meanwhile, the National Organization of Womyn has put the Little Sisters of the Poor on their “Dirty 100” list because they object to providing contraception.  Well, duh, they are a devout Catholic organization.  And many of NOW’s “Dirty 100” are Christian organizations, including Priests for Life and a number of Roman Catholic dioceses and Christian colleges.  One might as well castigate mosques or synagogues as “dirty” for not hosting pig-pickins.

(NOW labels the aforesaid groups as the "Dirty 100" here.)

And if one finds my labeling NOW “Feminazis” offensive, is not their labeling of religious groups that object to participating in their agenda as “dirty” echo the vile use of the epithet “Dirty Jew” by Nazis and other anti-semites?

But what do you expect from people so ethically bankrupt that they put free employer-provided birth control over freedom of religion?

More on Mozilla and the Pink Shirts (Or You think I’m ticked?)

Mozilla and the Pink Shirts are finding out the hard way that a lot of Americans do not like the squelching and punishment of free speech.  The backlash is so great that Mozilla has decided to clam up.

And if you think I’ve been worked up over the firing (or the equivalent) of Brendan Eich, read Matt Walsh’s post on this matter.  The beginning will give you the flavor:

Dear gay rights militants, dear progressive tyrants, dear liberal fascists, dear haters of free speech, dear crusaders for ideological conformity, dear left wing bullies:

You will lose.

I know you’ve got legions of sycophants kowtowing to you these days, and the rest you’ve set out to destroy — but you will lose.

So, you’ve tracked another dissident and skinned him alive. You’ve made an example of Brendan Eich, and now you dance joyously around his disemboweled carcass. You have his head on a spike, and you consider this a conquest in your eternal crusade to eradicate diversity and punish differing opinions. You launched your millionth campaign of intimidation, and now another good man has been dragged through the mud, to the sounds of taunting and jeering and death threats.

Please read the whole thing.  It is a wonderful rant I can only envy.  Walsh’s main thesis is that Pink Shirts with this episode have discredited themselves for all to see.  Addressing them still, he writes:

You fancy yourselves the ideological descendants of civil rights pioneers, but these tactics put you in the same vein as book burners and Puritan witch hunters. When your story is ultimately told, it’ll read more like The Crucible than the Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.

And that’s why you’ll lose.

You might have fooled society forever if you’d just kept singing about love and kindness, and never started bombarding Christians with your bitter hate and hostility. You might have gained some lasting ground if you hoisted your banner of free love, and never used it to diminish free speech.

But the proverbial cat is out of the bag. You’ve been made.

Because of your own behavior, when people like myself tell the world about the vicious death wishes and vulgar hate mail we receive from your kind on a DAILY basis, everyone will believe us. It’s no secret anymore. Without question and without exaggeration, the ‘gay rights movement’ is the angriest, most ruthless, most controlling, most intolerant of all the ideological enterprises in the country. Now, everyone knows it.

So you’ll lose. People are starting to see that you are the pigs on this Animal Farm, and the equality of which you preach is a very unequal equality indeed.

I certainly hope Walsh is correct about this outcome.  I am not as confident in the American people as I once was, but he may be right.

George Will also points out that the Pink Shirts are “sore winners” who “unsatisfied with victory… want to stamp out and punish people for their previous views.”

And he sagely notes that this episode makes the full disclosure of political donations problematic.

This case is an example of why some of us who used to be for full disclosure no longer are. The people advocating full disclosure in campaign contributions say we just want voters to be able to make an informed choice. That's not what they're doing at all. They really want to enable themselves to mount punitive campaigns and to tear people and chill political speech.

Exactly.  In the current toxic atmosphere belched out by the progressives and their ilk, we not only need a secret ballot, we need secret donations to at least a substantial extent so people can participate in the political process without fear of retaliation and black listing.

Richard Fernandez has written a thoughtful column about the culture war and the raw and dangerous power behind it.

The removal of Eich is about fascism.  It’s about one group of people forcing everyone else to bow to their hat on a pole; it’s about book burning, compelling obeisance to, as Jame Surowiecki put it, “a universal ideology” in a manner so bald that even those who might gain politically in the short term from it are horrified by its crudity.

Kevin Williamson looks at various Lib/Left efforts to squelch and punish free speech.  He begins (And, again, do read it all.):

The word “liberal” has taken a beating over the last few days: A Mozilla executive was hounded out of his position at the firm he co-founded by left-wing campaigners resolved to punish him for having made a donation to a successful California ballot initiative that defined marriage in traditional terms; Adam Weinstein, whose downwardly mobile credibility has taken him from ABC to Gawker, called for literally imprisoning people with the wrong views about global warming, writing, “Those malcontents must be punished and stopped”; Mr. Weinstein himself was simply forwarding a dumbed-down-enough-for-Gawker version of the arguments of philosophy professor Lawrence Torcello; Katherine Timpf, a reporter for Campus Reform, faced a human barricade to keep her from asking questions of those attending a feminist leadership conference, whose organizers informed her that the group was “inclusive” and therefore she was “not welcome here”; Charles Murray, one of the most important social scientists of his generation, was denounced as a “known white supremacist” by Texas Democrats for holding heterodox views about education policy; national Democrats spent the week arguing for the anti-free-speech side of a landmark First Amendment case and the anti-religious-freedom side of a case involving the Religious Freedom Restoration Act; Lois Lerner, the Left’s best friend at the IRS, faces contempt charges related to her role in the Democrats’ coopting the IRS as a weapon against their political enemies; . . . .

The convocation of clowns on the left screeched with one semi-literate and inchoate voice when my colleague Jonah Goldberg, borrowing the precise words of one of their own, titled a book Liberal Fascism. Most of them didn’t read it, but the ones who did apparently took what was intended as criticism and read it as a blueprint for political action.

Welcome to the Liberal Gulag.

That term may be perverse, but it is not an exaggeration.

It is indeed not an exaggeration.  The Bookworm also points out the attacks on our freedom are more dangerous than that from a Gay Mafia.  It is more like a Soviet:

Yes, there’s thuggery involved, which is a mafia tactic.  But unlike the mafia, which was just in it for the money, the new Soviet is in it to subordinate the individual and his beliefs entirely to the will of the Leftist state.

Nor is this thuggery a fringe movement.  While I am very honored here at the Bookworm Room to have gay readers who understand that the safest place for all individuals (regardless of race, color, creed, gender indentification, sexual orientation, etc.) is in a nation that leaves the individual alone, I can tell you that every one of my Leftist friends on my “real me” Facebook, gay or straight, applauds the gay Soviet’s successful thuggery against Eich.  These Facebook friends are, without exception, affluent, educated, successful, and vocal, and they think it’s a great thing that a productive man who has never once been accused of fomenting any discrimination in the workplace was the target of an attack aimed at destroying his livelihood.

This time, it was the non-governmental Leftist collective that acted, but you know they were thinking how much better it would be if they could just outlaw opposing thought. Why convince someone that your position has merit when you can more easily destroy them, which has the useful feature of sending a strong message to any other heretics out there?

And guess who is next?  Us Christians.  Heck, we are under attack already.

Some may think “turning the other cheek” is the operative scripture in this situation.  But, particularly since it is not just us Christians under attack, I think it is Proverbs 25:26 (ESV):

Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain

is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.

It Is Time to Stand Up to the Pink Shirts UPDATED

Yesterday was a dark day for free speech in America.  Because he gave a political contribution six years ago to defend traditional marriage, namely to Proposition 8, Brendan Eich was hounded from his CEO job at Mozilla.  The Pink Shirts demanded his resignation and the board of Mozilla caved like a house of cards.

One may say I am getting worked up against an exercise of free speech.  Those who are convinced that opposition to gay “marriage” is intolerable bigotry worthy of banning from society spoke out and were listened to.  And this was not a government attack on free speech.

But using one’s free speech to say that those one disagrees with must be silenced and fired from their jobs is abusing free speech to attack free speech.  Private citizens have the legal right to act so odiously in America.  But it is still an attack on free speech and one to be called out and opposed.

And do not be too sure the Feds are not supporting the Pink Shirts.    Remember the IRS leaked the names of Proposition 8 contributors to the Gay Mafia’s Human Right Campaign, aiding Pink Shirt attacks on them.

And please do not think this is merely a gay rights issue.  The firing of Eich (Oh, yeah.  He “resigned.”  Yeah, right.) is a successful attack on free speech.  And there are gays and gay rights supporters who are appalled at this attack.  Andrew Sullivan:

The whole episode disgusts me – as it should disgust anyone interested in a tolerant and diverse society. If this is the gay rights movement today – hounding our opponents with a fanaticism more like the religious right than anyone else – then count me out. If we are about intimidating the free speech of others, we are no better than the anti-gay bullies who came before us.

Gay marriage supporter Moe Lane is urging a boycott of Mozilla’s Firefox browser.  I heartily join him in so doing.

And gays also are targets of the Pink Shirts.  One such example:

[Brandon] Ambrosino is a liberal gay male who has enraged they gay community by writing, among other things, that the gay left “routinely scour the private lives and social media accounts of our political opponents in the hopes of demonizing them as archaic, unthinking, and bigoted”

For these and other sins, Ambrosino has made himself an enemy to the very group of which he is a part.

What is perhaps most galling is that the Pink Shirts insist they are acting in the name of “tolerance” and “inclusion”.  (Sound familiar?)  This e-mail from GLAAD stands out:

Mozilla’s strong statement in favor of equality today reflects where corporate America is: inclusive, safe, and welcoming to all.

. . . Unless you disagree with GLAAD, of course.

The Pink Shirts are a different version of the bullies they so self-righteously oppose.  Like all bullies and like all who attack free speech in America, they must be stood up to and opposed.  Or they and other Leftist Brown Shirts will continue to march and trample upon our freedoms.  And free speech will more and more be mangled to mean: “You’re free to agree with the mob. You’re not free to disagree with the mob.”

MORE:
David Fischler does a brilliant send up of the PC Doublespeak from Mozilla.  For example:

We didn’t act like you’d expect Mozilla to act. We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry. We must do better.

We forgot that freedom of thought was not supposed to exist at Mozilla, and didn’t remember fact enough. Self-flagellation will begin immediately.

Brendan Eich has chosen to step down from his role as CEO. He’s made this decision for Mozilla and our community.

We built an auto da fe in the company atrium, and Brendan was gracious enough to jump right into it.

Totalitarians and their toadies are so good at lying and at removing all meaning from language to lie.
